You’re about to build a new home. Perhaps this is the dream home
that you’ve always wanted. Maybe it’s just a side project because you’ve always
wanted to see your construction and design skills turned into a real home. Whatever
the case may be, you’re thrilled about the project. You’ve explored different building
materials, you’ve laid out the foundation and you’re ready to get building. Are
you forgetting anything?
Just because you’re skilled at new construction doesn’t mean that you’ll be able
to cover every aspect of building a new home by yourself. There are certain areas
of home building that require assistance from an expert in those areas. Plumbing
is perhaps the most important of these. You don’t want to get everything all set
up in your dream home and then discover that the plumbing doesn’t work. Worse, you
don’t want to flood your home and ruin your construction because you didn’t put
the plumbing into the design correctly.
In order to avoid these problems, you should consider hiring
a plumber to assist with the new construction. If you want to do all of the work
yourself, the plumber can merely act as your consultant on the project. A qualified
plumber will be able to tell you what will work where and what you’ll need to do
differently to avoid plumbing problems. He’ll be able to assist you in choosing
the right materials and layout for your plumbing to ensure that you won’t flood
your home if the pipes burst. He’ll even be able to assist you in making choices
which are healthier for the occupants of the home and better for the environment
if those issues are of concern to you in your construction.
Whether a plumber acts as a consultant on the project or actually does the dirty
work for you, he fills an important role. Plumbing problems in the home are one
of the most frustrating issues for anyone. They’re even worse than a leaky roof
in a rainstorm; at least you can lay down tarp and buckets for that problem. When
the toilets and showers don’t work, you can’t do much besides move to a hotel until
the problem is repaired. It makes more sense to avoid those problems by getting
help from a qualified plumber than to take your chances on dealing with the ramifications
of your own mistakes.
No one expects you to know how to complete every aspect of a new construction project.
Feel free to try your hand at crafting new cabinets, laying out floors and designing
a unique landscape for your new home. But leave the really important stuff to the
people who have training in doing it right. No one is going to see those pipes anyway
but they are certainly going to know if they don’t work right.
